Koortwah - Originally, Jake Courtois, who opted for a more phonetic sobriquet - has a dark and brooding sound with a touch of Warholian ecstasy. Not only is his music as good as his looks, but he also has begun pairing his songs with simple yet interesting, and aesthetically beautiful videos. The videos were what truly reminded me of Warhol; it’s as if the video for “Candy In The Sun” is a screen test that Warhol tampered with to make just a little psychedelic.

This is a diversion from our usual suspects, but this cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” by Carrie Manolakos is giving me chills I had never anticipated before. Manolakos is best known for her time spent in Broadway’s WICKED as Elphaba, and is currently promoting a solo album entitled ECHO. The original version of “Creep” is one thing, a beautiful and heart-wrenching song about unworthiness, but this live version Manolakos sings at Joe’s Pub is on a platform of its own. This track was taken from the original audio of a youtube video of Manolakos performing live, which adds its own entire layer of awe.

M. Ward gets it so right with this track that you fall in deep and don’t need to come up for air because whatever kind of special non-oxygen air that he’s providing down below is that much greater.

It’s slow and you’re thankful; it’s the song that you want to wake to and nod off to. The recording posted here of “Post-War” is from Matthew Ward’s Daytrotter Session that was released just a couple of weeks ago. I recommend at least going for the 7-day trial that the website offers because you are able to download the sessions for zilch dollabills an there is some true treasure. The normal studio album recording of this track also kills it with beauty.

Everyone’s favorite broken-hearted-harlot is gracing us with another self-spliced video comprised of personally collected clips from across the gamut. Her music video for “Carmen” is an appropriately somber, yet beautiful and lush, video narrating the demise of a forlorn beauty queen who is “lyin’ to herself, cause her liquor’s top shelf.” Complete with over-dubbed moments where Lana asks a nameless man to tell her why she’s his dream girl, there is an intimate quality of this video that hadn’t quite been breached in her other DIY-video projects.

(Note, as DIY as it appears, Lana has released statements thanking her collaborators who helped her with filming and editing on this video)

Victoria Hesketh, popularly known as Britain’s electro-pop princess Little Boots, is dropping her latest single tomorrow entitled “Every Night I Say A Prayer.” Written in collaboration with Hercules and Love Affair’s Andy Butler, the original track is an audio tribute to the glamour of nu-disco. This remix by Tensnake is an equally stunning and even more club-inspired homage to the beauty of dancing through the night. Music up, lights down, go to town.

Check out the free digital download tomorrow, April 23rd, and also Nylon Magazine’s article on this track, where four previously released (and equally stunning) remixes for Trax Records are featured. Conner Youngblood’s new single is no disappointment. “Proportions,” the latest addition to the Yale-goer’s growing collection of blogosphere hits, features echoing snaps (who’s not a fan of echoing snaps??) and his familiarly airy vocal line. Its simplicity feeds into a sense of profundity that doesn’t let you go until the track is over.
